Yahoo Messenger 9, BETA

msg9_b1_client_4.jpgAt first, let me say that BETA this, BETA that, I’m getting sick of all the BETA… Everybody is using the word BETA slammed on anything, or any kind of software, website and so on… but enough ranting.

Yahoo Messenger, is quite a popular piece of software nowadays. I like it and I don’t like it. I have to use it for work, and beats the hell out of ticket systems, when communication is real time, but I hate using it in personal matters… all the smiley’s and emoticons in the world, won’t give it that “personal” feeling a nice face to face conversation brings, or even a phone call.

I found out today via an3i.ro that the guys over at Yahoo managed to get to version 9 of the Yahoo Messenger. I wasn’t able to download it, and play with it. They have a nice movie showing off the new stuff they implemented. Lots of it useless in my opinion, but it’s the eye candy that does the trick. I just wish they did something with the Linux version also, but in the meanwhile, never mind, Pidgin is here!

Later Edit: Downloaded, installed, looks dandy… nice themes, I don’t like the detailed list features, I prefer single row / contact. Same old commercial at the bottom, and they didn’t do anything to the archive, and that’s a disappointment. They don’t show your name or your friend’s name on every line they type, which is cool, but I’m too tired right now… going to sleep.

LINA! Open LINA!

Their description is quite explanatory:

LINA enables Open Source applications to run on Windows, Mac OS X, and UNIX operating systems with native look and feel. It’s quite a nifty thing, and I can’t wait to get home and play with it!!!!

Websites: new, old, useful, funny etc.

Well, I believe we all have our habits on the web. And by habits, I mean things we do, tools we use, things we laugh at.

I spend most of my day online, due to my line of work and thus I use lots of sites and tools offered by these sites. Also, everyday I get spammed with lots of crap by mail or instant messenger, so I decided to compile a list of sites I visit. Because of the quantit, i decided to add a maximum of 10 links for each category.

And of course, now I got bored, and I’m leaving the list open… Do you want me to add some stuff here? post a comment.

The return of the…

I really had no idea what title to use for this post, as it marks my return to the blogosphere… I have so many things to tell you, so many funny videos on YouTube worth linking up, so many jokes, so many things that happened…

Let’s start with something funny: Everyone remembers “Dragostea din Tei” right? the stupid Romanian song that went crazy in every non-Romanian talking country around Europe… Yeah, that’s it! You remember it! I’ve got two links for you right now

Now that’s crazy, but the opera version sounds a bit cool…

I returned from The Netherlands, and you can see some pics here. I flew a Fokker 70 on my way there, and the same Fokker on my way back. I can’t say that it was a pleasant first flight for me, but the pilot managed to land safely, two times 😀 and I have no complains. The funny thing is that there is some experimental model of Fokker out there, one which was built to land on MUD… Don’t ask me why, but they call it a mudder fokker (do I need to spell that out for you? 🙂 )

It was time to say goodbye to my trusty Nokia 3510i, and for the first time in many many years, I switched brands, and I got a Sony Ericsson. It’s a J220i, quite simple, quite lame, no Romanian T9 dictionary, which means less text messages from me from now on, because I’m lazy, and I can log into my Gmail account now over WAP or GPRS or whatever. The old Nokia did not support Gmail’s forms, and I couldn’t type my username & password…

PS: I decided to stop using Microsoft Windows a few months ago, and I’m not using it anymore, Ubuntu became my primary OS, so all of you out there who want Joost invites, I’m sorry, but I can’t run Joost on Linux… maybe on one of the other computers around the house or in the office, if the “request” is really high…

Ubuntu resolution and sound

Eye candy as it is, Ubuntu+Beryl on my Acer TravelMate 2482NWXMi didn’t allow a resolution change higher than 1024×768. The problem is solved with the 915resolution package. So, if you have the same problem I was facing, just install the package, restart your X server and voilà: 1280×800.

Search for the package:

marius@OliveJuice:~$ sudo aptitude update

marius@OliveJuice:~$ sudo aptitude upgrade

marius@OliveJuice:~$ aptitude search 915resolution
p 915resolution - resolution modification tool for Intel graphic chipset

Install the package:

marius@OliveJuice:~$ sudo aptitude install 915resolution

And now restart your X server by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace on your keyboard, or just reboot Ubuntu. After restarting X, or reboting, go to System > Preferences > Screen Resolution, and select 1280×800.

My second problem today with my lappy, was that I tried watching a movie and couldn’t do it without plugging in my headphones since my laptop speakers wouldn’t work. Everything was fine with a jack plugged in, but the speakers just didn’t want to work, so I did a little bit of digging. First off, let’s see our sound cards:

If this matches, you should be on the right path, by following up here. I found on the Ubuntu Bug tracker bug number #94373. Long story told short, I read there, modified 1 file, and voilà: I have sound on the laptop speakers.

root@OliveJuice:~# echo "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
root@OliveJuice:~ # rmmod snd-hda-intel
root@OliveJuice:~# modprobe snd-hda-intel

The important thing here, is the first command, the echo redirected to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file. It adds the snd_hda_intel model=auto. The rmmod command might say that the module is in use, and cannot be unloaded, but that’s hardly a problem. Just reboot, and your speakers should work. Mine sure did.

Now, that was easy wasn’t it? tweak here, tweak there, and thanks to the Open Source community out there, amost everything can be fixed in a matter of minutes if someone already had that problem, or in a matter of days, if this is a new bug. Developers are always ready to help out.

Ubuntu 7.04

Acum ceva vreme, eram mandrul “instalator” al unui Mac OSX 10.4.6 pe un laptop Acer TravelMate 2482NWXMi. Experienta a fost minunata, lots of eye candy, o gramada de chestii noi, frumoase, utile, rapide etc. etc. etc. A fost prima mea experienta cu Mac OSX mai mult decat o privire sau cateva clickuri, asa ca eram multumit, si drawbackurile erau 2 majore, dar destul de nesemnificative:

  • nu imi mergea placa Ethernet (pe fir) But I’m a wireless geek… era nasol insa cand nu aveam nici un acces point in zona, si
  • nu mergea sunetul pe iesirea jack, dar mergea pe boxele incorporate, deci no stress nici acolo. Nu prea ascult muzica la laptop. Am in zona un noise maker mai suparat de obicei.

S-a intamplat totusi sa pun mana pe un MacBook si un iBook de la mama lor Steve Jobbs, chestie care a facut ca install-ul meu sa para penibil…

Concluzia? dezinstalarea Mac OSX, si revenirea la obiectul muncii, Linux. Mai precis un Ubuntu 7.04, mersi Dan pentru Live CD!! Bineinteles ca tot Eye-Candy’ul care mi l-a bagat in cap Mac OSX’ul trebuia “recuperat” cumva, asa ca, dupa un pic de documentare, citit cateva forumuri, solutia s-a dovedit a fi Beryl. Daca nu ai auzit de Beryl inca, exista un filmulet pe YouTube care merita vazut. Desigur un search dupa BERYL pe YouTube o sa gaseasca multe alte filmulete care merita vazute.

15 minute de glorie…

Click meSe pare ca a avut si wirelessisfun.com cele 15 minte de glorie bine meritate. Ne-am trezit pe prima pagina de la digg.com ieri, si nu stiam de ce incepe sa creasca numarul de vizitatori 🙂 Pana la urma, dupa ce a trecut macelul si si-a revenit un pic serverul, ne-am dat seama ca mai vrem… Cateva statistici dupa “eveniment” peste 9.000 de vizitatori unici, peste 10.000 de page loads si peste 1.100 diggs. Yay!

In alta ordine de idei, nu mai am zahar si imi beau cafeaua amara azi… Vinul fiert din Insomnia lasa de dorit, hotspotul gratuit WiFi ofera o mica distractie si conexiunea lor la internet nu este chiar asa lousy cum era asta vara. Clubul La Tevi (Strada Potaissa) a organizat un mirobolant concurs de darts duminica trecuta. Andrei, patronul, promite ca va reveni tot la 2 saptamani cu aceasta competitie, intrare in concurs 10 RON, fisele sunt din partea barului, se joaca 1 la 1, jocul este 501, cu master out, no bull, 2 out of 3 in prima runda, apoi se merge mai departe. Premiile sunt pentru locurile 1 si 2: se impart banii stransi din taxa de participare, si tot Andrei zicea ceva de un set nou nout de sageti Assasin de 18g *yummy*. Sper sa ajung si eu saptamana urmatoare, si sa revin cu niste poze. Barul are si un hotspot WiFi de la c*free, deci este ca o a doua casa pentru mine dupa Teahouse Flowers.

Nu credeam ca o sa mai reusesc, era sa renunt la un moment dat, dar pana la urma, tot raul spre bine, sau cum spuneaaboutmac.jpg mai devreme un prieten, there is no joy without a little hustle!

Mai am inca multe de facut, si de invatat, dar merita… So right about now, I’m going to yell: “In your face Mr. Gates!”

In alta ordine de idei, mi-am petrecut weekendul instaland mac osx, am pus niste poze pe flickr, si probabil, dar nu sigur, ca o sa postez cu data de ieri si un post numit “birou de blogger” ca de aia am facut pozele 😉 deci: Biroul 1 si Biroul 2. Va rog sa nu va legati de Halle Berry ca nu v-a facut nimic, da?

Update: Nu este vorba de o masina virtuala, si nici de un produs al companiei Apple, este un Acer TravelMate 2482NWXMi, procesor intel, si momentan cu un superb dual boot mac OS X / Windows XP… Windows is going bye bye soon, linux will take over 😉

Pai, am facut azi primii pasi spre un sistem de operare MAC OS X pe laptopul meu… dupa lupte seculare care au duratjoblogo.gif cateva ore, ca nu vroiam sa pierd windowsul si tot ce aveam pe aici deja configurat si pus la punct, m-am cam prins care e faza: modificare de partitii, backup pe un harddisk extern, am salvat aproape tot ce aveam nevoie… A trebuit sa renunt la niste seriale pe care le adunam sa le scriu pe DVD’uri (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Heroes… 🙁 ) dar nu e stres. Se mai gasesc. Eh eu am reusit sa trec de primele probleme. Si iata un MAC OS X care se instaleaza frumos, stau si astept, ma enerveaza…

Trebuie sa plec in centru, azi canta Kumm in Roland Garros. Au venit niste prietene de la Timisoara cu care ar trebui sa ma intalnesc.

Totul mergea bine, pana cand a venit mult asteptatul moment sa pornesc noul sistem de operare… Ciu Ciu… s-a blocat… restart! se blocheaza din nou. restart cu dvd’ul inauntru, se blocheaza din nou… nervi, strigate urlete… mai incerc.. inca o data… poate cand revin. Daca tot nu reusesc, I’ll stick to my linux.

 Update: ei bine, am incercat mai multe variante, de la 10.4.8 pana la 10.4.5 si nici una nu merge. I need professional help, I never thought I would say this. so tomorrow, either I get the help I need, either I just get my linux back, up and running.
